history

The country has been a Portuguese colony since its discovery and settlement by the Portuguese in 1471 . The Portuguese Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) acted as the central bank in the colonies and had been present in São Tomé and Príncipe since 1868.

After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal on April 25, 1974, the country gained independence from Portugal on July 12, 1975. The branch of the BNU on São Tomé and Príncipe was nationalized in the course of the law no. 16/76 of May 24, 1976 and renamed Banco Nacional de São Tomé e Príncipe . From then on, the bank took over the tasks of the central bank and the development bank of the country and was also the only commercial bank in the planned economy of the socialist one-party government of the new island state.

After the constitutional referendum in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1990 , the country gave up the planned economy and turned to the market economy . With Law No. 8/92 of August 26, 1992, the central bank was renamed what is now the Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe , while the commercial banking sector was spun off and privatized as Banco Internacional de São Tomé e Príncipe . The first governor of the newly formed central bank was Adelino Castelo David .
