Constitutional referendum in São Tomé and Príncipe 1990

The constitutional referendum in São Tomé and Príncipe 1990 took place on August 22, 1990 and marks the transition of the West African island state of São Tomé and Príncipe to electoral democracy and a multi-party system . A new constitution was put to the vote, which for the first time since the country's independence in 1975 both codified multi-party democracy and restricted the presidential term of office to two legislative terms .

95.3% of voters approved the introduction of the new constitution, paving the way for parliamentary elections on January 20, 1991 , the first free elections in the country.
