Presidential elections in São Tomé and Príncipe 1991
The presidential elections in São Tomé and Príncipe 1991 took place on March 3, 1991 and were the first ever presidential elections in São Tomé and Príncipe , since the president of the country had been determined by the National Assembly up until then . A constitutional referendum in the previous year had set the course for a democratization of the country and this election. Ultimately, however, there was only one candidate, Miguel Trovoada , who was elected unopposed and sworn in on April 3, 1991 as the second president of São Tomé and Principe.
Candidates
Originally, three candidates had declared their intention to stand for election:
- Miguel Trovoada , former Prime Minister who ran as an independent, but had the support of the Partido de Convergência Democrática-Grupa de Reflexão (PCD-GR) and Coligação Democrática da Oposição (CODO) parties.
- Monso dos Santos from the Frente Democrática Cristã (FDC)
and
- Guadalupe de Ceita , an independent candidate.
Manuel Pinto da Costa , president since the independence of São Tomé and Príncipes in 1975, no longer ran and declared his withdrawal from politics. The former state party Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe had not put up its own candidate.
A month before the election, both Monso dos Santos and Guadalupe de Ceita withdrew their candidacy, leaving Trovoada as the only candidate. Despite the non-existent alternative, the turnout was 60.0%.
