The Acção Democrática Independente (ADI) won the 2010 elections and, with Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada , formed a minority government until December 2012 . Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe-Partido Social Democrata (MLSTP-PSD) ruled under Prime Minister Gabriel Arcanjo da Costa until the end of the legislative period . The ADI started with the aim of defending its 2010 parliamentary majority of 26 seats against the 21 seats of the ruling party MLSTP-PSD.

The Partido de Convergência Democrática - Grupa de Reflexão (PCD) joined the electoral alliance with the Movimento Democrático das Forças da Mudança-Partido Liberal (MDFM-PL) in 2002 and 2006 , but both have been competing separately since 2010. The ADI spin-off União dos Democratas para Cidadania e Desenvolvimento (UDD) took place for the second time.

The opposition party ADI achieved an overwhelming election victory. It was able to expand its parliamentary majority from 2010 to an absolute majority, so that it can easily form a sole government with 33 out of 55 seats. The previous ruling party MLSTP-PSD lost five seats in the Assembleia Nacional and lost its ability to continue to govern. With only 23 seats, it has one seat ahead of the big election winner MLSTP-PSD, who are represented in the Assembleia Nacional with seven new mandates and 22 seats.

The electoral alliance of PCD, MDFM and UDD have lost a seat. New to the Assembleia Nacional is the list of independents with two members.
