The Dobra is the currency on São Tomé and Príncipe . It is issued by the central bank of the African island state, the Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe .

A Dobra was divided into 100 Cêntimos , but these are currently (as of June 2020) no longer used. 1000 Dobra are also called Conto .

Since 1997 there have been coins of 500, 1000 and 2000 Dobra as well as banknotes of 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 Dobra in circulation . Banknotes with denominations lower than 5000 Dobra can no longer be found in circulation.

Until independence on July 12, 1975, the Portuguese escudo was the currency in São Tomé and Príncipe.

On July 29th, 2009 it was agreed in an agreement with Portugal to peg the Dobra to the euro with effect from January 1st, 2010 at a ratio of EUR 1 = 24,500 hours.

Currency reform

On the occasion of its 25th anniversary in January 2018, the central bank announced on August 25, 2017 a new denomination (reduction by 1000 units) and thus the issue of a new series of banknotes. The previous currency STD was replaced on January 1, 2018 by the new currency STN: 1000 STD = 1 STN. The fixed exchange rate is 1 EUR = 24.50 STN. The previous currency STD remained in place until June 30, 2018.

The new series of banknotes, featuring native wildlife, is produced by De La Rue and includes denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Dobra. The two lowest denominations are printed on polypropylene . The remaining banknotes are printed on a cotton substrate and have additional security features .
