The South Sudanese pound ( English South Sudanese Pound ) is the currency of the Republic of South Sudan , which became independent on July 9, 2011 . It was officially introduced on July 18, 2011, and has been available as cash in the country since July 24. The new currency was originally announced for Independence Day. The banknotes were printed in the UK and arrived in the country on July 13th. The plan was to start paying state employees' salaries in the new currency from the end of July. The South Sudanese pound should be available from July 18, 2011 and be exchanged at a rate of 1: 1 for the previous common currency, the Sudanese pound . At the same time, the government of “rest” Sudan also introduced new banknotes, allegedly to avoid speculation. The old banknotes of the whole of Sudan still circulating in South Sudan are officially worthless, a problem that needs to be resolved between the respective central banks of the two countries. The new currency seems to get caught in the impending economic war between Sudan and South Sudan.
Banknotes
The banknotes show on one side the portrait of John Garang , the southern Sudanese national hero and former leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Army ( Sudan People's Liberation Army ) in the Southern Sudan Liberation War . On the other side, there are images that symbolize the culture and wealth of the country.
Banknotes were issued in the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 pounds, and since October 2011 for 5, 10 and 25 piastres.
