The ariary is the currency of Madagascar . On August 1, 2003, it replaced the Madagascar franc . 1 ariary is divided into 5 iraimbilanja. This makes the Malagasy currency, along with Mauritania's Ouguiya , the only one in the world that deviates from the decimal system . The conversion rate is 1 ariary = 5 Madagascar francs, so one iraimbilanja corresponds exactly to one Madagascar franc. The value in Madagascar francs was still printed on the banknotes until mid-2009, albeit smaller. Between June 2009 and January 2010 new banknotes for 2000, 5000 and 10,000 Ariary were issued, on which the value in Francs is no longer shown. According to the Malagasy central bank, the reason for the introduction of the new currency is the introduction of the euro in the EU , as a result of which the franc previously used has lost its equivalent in France .
The currency denomination Ariary is derived from the Arabic ar-riyāl , the name for the silver 8 reales coins that were common from South America to East Africa at the end of the 18th century.
From 1962 banknotes showed not only the face value in francs but also the corresponding value in ariary. The first coins, which only showed a value in Ariary, appeared in 1978. Especially in the capital Antananarivo and in the low price segment up to 1000 Francs / 200 Ariary, the currency unit Ariary was still used during the Franc period.
