The canton Lauterbourg was 2015 a French constituency in the Arrondissement Wissembourg in the Bas-Rhin in the region Alsace .

history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Wissembourg District". With the creation of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of the Wissembourg arrondissement. In the German Empire from 1871 to 1919, a district of Weißenburg existed within the realm of Alsace-Lorraine without any further subdivisions above the towns and municipalities. On June 28, 1919, the canton again became part of the Wissembourg arrondissement. On March 22, 2015, the canton was dissolved. All municipalities now belong to the canton of Wissembourg in the Arrondissement of Haguenau-Wissembourg .

geography

The canton bordered Germany in the north with the district of Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate . In the east, the Upper Rhine forms the border with the also German district of Rastatt in the administrative district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg .

Inner French borders existed with the canton Seltz to the south and the canton Wissembourg in the west.
