The canton of Haguenau is a French constituency in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) in France .
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Strasbourg District".
With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Strasbourg.
From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of what was then the " District of Hagenau ".
On June 28, 1919, the canton became part of the newly founded Arrondissement Haguenau-Wissembourg .
geography
Until 2014, the canton bordered the cantons of Wœrth and Soultz-sous-Forêts in the arrondissement Wissembourg , the east with the canton Bischwiller , the south and southwest with the cantons Brumath and Hochfelden in the arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne and the north-west with the canton Niederbronn -les-bains .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the 16 communities Batzendorf , Berstheim , Dauendorf , Haguenau , Hochstett , Huttendorf , Kaltenhouse , Morschwiller , Niederschaeffolsheim , Ohlungen , Schweighouse-sur-Moder , Uhlwiller , Wahlenheim , Weitbruch , Wintershouse belonged to the canton Haguenau and Wittersheim . Its layout corresponded to an area of 275.29 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6709.
