Wittersheim is a French commune with 661 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region ( Alsace until 2015 ). It is located in the canton of Haguenau and belongs to the Haguenau-Wissembourg arrondissement .

geography

Wittersheim is located about ten kilometers west of Haguenau and 20 km north of Strasbourg in the Collines de Brumath ("Hill of Brumath ") on the edge of the Upper Rhine Plain .

The village is surrounded by the Rissbach in the east , the Duerrbachgraben and the Gebolsheimerbach in the west . It bears the name of the hamlet Gebolsheim, which belongs to the municipality of Wittersheim. Both streams are left tributaries of the Zorn .

history

Grave finds of Roman reliefs in Gebolsheim show that the area was already settled in antiquity.

Wittersheim was first mentioned in 742. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Bailiwick of Hagenau and was an imperial village .

The place came to France with the Peace of Westphalia .

Religions

The majority of the population of Wittersheim is Catholic , but there was also a Jewish proportion of the population, which in 1807 was 22 percent. The Catholic-Jewish wash house from the 19th century is evidence of this .

Personalities

The Rabbi Alexander Nathan was born in 1729 in Wittersheim. Because of his origins, he took the surname Alsatian . He worked in Freudental from 1769 , where he died in 1816.
