Schirrhein is a French commune with 2,227 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

geography

The border to Schirrhoffen partly runs through residential areas. The other neighboring communities are Drusenheim , Oberhoffen-sur-Moder , Soufflenheim and Haguenau .

history

From 1871 to 1918 Lorraine and Alsace belonged to the German Empire , and the place was called "Schirrheim". The place name has a Celtic origin: "scir" means "hall", "barn" or hay to be dried. The footballer Oscar Heisserer (1914-2004) was born in Schirrhein.
