Under Möðrudalsöræfi is defined as a part of the Icelandic highlands. The area is located in the northeast of Iceland around the built-up areas that belong to the Möðrudalur farm , after which it is named. In some books you can also find the name Möðrudalsheiði .

desert

It is a largely desert area, which the name suggests: öræfi is an Icelandic word for wasteland or desert (cf. also Öræfajökull).

The Möðrudalsöræfi borders in the east on the Jökuldalsheiði , in the south on the Ódáðahraun and the Brúaröræfi , in the west on the Mývatnsöræfi , in the north on the Haugsöræfi .

Möðrudalsfjallgarður

The mountain range of Möðrudalsfjallgarður which lies to the east of the court, also belongs to this arid area as well as the Palagonitberge the Víðidalsfjöll . Möðrudalsfjallgarður is also made of palagonite, the mountains are very steep and generally between 700 and 800 m high, the highest of them is Geitafell with 851 m. The old part of the ring road crosses these mountains. From the top of the pass there is a view over the area and far to Askja .

Víðidalsfjöll (Norðurmúlasýsla)

There is also a mountain range of the same name in north-west Iceland near Blönduós.

The Víðidalsfjöll in the district of Norðumúlasýsla are east of the ring road No. 1. It is a mountain range that emerged from eruptions from a volcanic fissure under a glacier and consists of palagonite.

The mountains are pointed cones that rise up to 856 m.

Old and new ring road

The ring road crosses the wasteland. Among other things, it leads along the Víðidalsfjöll. The old route (today unpaved road no. 901) ran right past Möðrudalur farm. Since the route was laid in 2005, this is now 8 km away from the asphalt overland connection.
