The Jökuldalsheiði is a plateau in northeast Iceland .

location

The Jökuldalsheiði lies west of the river Jökulsá á Brú . Both the ring road in its new course and its old course, the Möðrudalsleið , road 901, cross this area.

history

There are a large number of lakes on the plain and in the 19th century there were around 15 farms with around 150 inhabitants, a dense settlement for such a plateau by Icelandic standards. However, living conditions were very harsh.

The land was abandoned when the Askja eruption in 1875 buried the land under a layer of ash. Around the turn of the 20th century, some people settled again. But the last farm was given up in 1945.
