Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center (BiK-F) is a research facility based in Frankfurt am Main ( Germany ). After the center as the Biodiversity and Climate Research until 31 December 2014 within the framework of the Hessian from 1 July 2008 State Offensive for Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence was funded (LOEWE), it is since 2015 part of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum , the is funded by the Leibniz Association .

aims

The aim of the research center is to use innovative research approaches and methods to decipher current and past interactions between climate change and biodiversity at the organism level . On this basis, reliable projections for the future are developed and a basis for decision-making is worked out. With this objective and its interdisciplinarity , the research center has Europe-wide unique selling points. The spectrum of methods used ranges from molecular genetics and mass spectrometry to satellite-based remote sensing of climate , area and ecosystem reactions .

history

The research center was established as a biodiversity and climate research center as part of funding line 1 (LOEWE centers) of the first funding round of the Hessian state offensive for the development of scientific and economic excellence on February 15, 2008 by the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research as the sponsor of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum (FIS) in Frankfurt am Main and jointly applied for by the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main . The center was founded on July 1, 2008. The director of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum, Volker Mosbrugger, was in charge of the application . He is also the Research Center's Scientific Coordinator.

partner

The research center's partners supported by LOEWE funds were the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE) and the German Weather Service (DWD) . Another partner of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Center is the operator of environmental satellites EUMETSAT . In addition, there are other collaborations with companies (SMEs, via funding line 3 of the LOEWE program).

Scientific concept

The scientific concept of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Center is based on a matrix with a time-process axis and a space axis. Long-scale ( evolution and climate), medium-scale ( biodiversity dynamics and climate) and short-scale processes ( adaptation and climate) are examined on the time-process axis . On the spatial axis there are marine and terrestrial systems in tropical / subtropical , temperate and alpine / polar climatic zones . In this way, the Research Center Biodiversity and Climate makes scientific contributions to the management of climate change-related , ecologically or medically relevant changes in biodiversity, as well as to the fulfillment of international agreements such as the EU Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive and the European Water Framework Directive on a regional, national and European as well as global level , the Biodiversity Convention and the Framework Convention on Climate Change .

Seat of the center

The Maria Sibylla Merian House in 2012

Since 2013, the center has been located on the former Bockenheim campus of the university in the building of the Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry from 1957 after its renovation by the architecture firm SSP SchürmannSpannel . The architects of the building at that time were Ferdinand Kramer and Walther Dunkl. The building was renamed the Maria Sibylla Merian House in June 2017 .
