Forstfeld is a French commune with 737 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Haguenau-Wissembourg and the Canton of Bischwiller .

Of the approximately 490 hectares of the municipal area, about 80 hectares are forested. Part of it has been a nature reserve since 1994, where numerous rare plant species grow.

history

In Roman times there was a border fortification here. In 2001 a grave from the Hallstatt period and several high medieval burial mounds were found in the area of ​​Forstfeld . In addition, weapons, glass bead jewelry and objects made of metal and - which is a rarity - glazed ceramics were unearthed.

The place was first mentioned by name in 745. At that time it was still written Furdesfeld , in the Middle Ages Forschfald and in the 17th century Forstfelden .

In 1842 the first school was set up in Forstfeld; the school children had previously been taught in Kauffenheim .

For the year 1778, 30 Protestant and five Catholic families are recorded in Forstfeld. The communal church under the patronage of St. Etienne was built in 1835 and consecrated in 1836. It has an organ that was built by Joseph Stiehr in 1839 and restored by Louis Mockers in 1916 .

Community partnerships

A partnership with Condat-sur-Vienne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region has existed since 1973 . A meeting takes place every two years. The partnership goes back to the time of the Second World War ; at that time the residents of Forstfeld had been evacuated to Condat.
