Pottery tradition
At the beginning of the 18th century , stoneware potters from the Kannenbäckerland in the Westerwald settled in Betschdorf. They obtained the required raw materials clay and wood from the neighboring Hagenau Forest .
As was the case a thousand years ago in China , clay is still shaped by hand on turntables . The dried crockery is provided with a scratched decor and painted in cobalt blue . In the last step, the goods are fired and salt glazed at 1250 degrees .
In the Middle Ages, this technique came to Europe . In 1734 Peter Wingerter and Johannes Krummeich from the Westerwald opened the first pottery workshops in Betschdorf. At the end of the 18th century there were already 20 potteries in Betschdorf. After the French Revolution , more pottery craftsmen settled here, including Remmy , Schmitter and Burger .
Today there are still five pottery companies in Betschdorf that offer the blue-gray salt- glazed pottery as decorative goods.
