Mairie Crœttwiller

Crœttwiller (German Kröttweiler ) is a French commune with 176 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

history

The land belonged to the Empress Adelheid (Adelaide) . In the 13th and 14th centuries, Crœttwiller belonged to the von Fleckenstein family. The first known mention under the name "Kretenwilre" comes from the year 1347. Over the centuries the village changed its name several times: Greitwiller, Krötwiller, Groetwiller and Kreperer.

On July 24, 1870, the first skirmish in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 took place in Crœttwiller between the long-distance patrol of Count Zeppelin, the lancer Toussaint and the gendarme Koehler.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Crœttwiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Weißenburg district in the Lower Alsace district .
