history

Saint Barthélemy Church

An early mention of the settlement comes from the year 1145. There are speculations that the site was already settled in 631, when the Abbey of Weißenburg was founded.

The first church was built in the 13th or 14th century. It stood on the highest point of the district, but fell victim to a fire during a military invasion.

The place belonged to the old Principality of Speyer and in the French. During the revolution, the later cathedral capitular Franz Christoph Günther (1770–1848) worked there as pastor from the beginning of 1798 until his expulsion on August 20 of the same year . He was the son of the baroque sculptor Joachim Günther and the nephew of the famous baroque painter Matthäus Günther .

From 1871 to 1918, when the area belonged to the German Empire, Schleithal was subordinate to the canton of Lauterburg .
