Merkwiller-Pechelbronn ( German Merkweiler-Pechelbronn ) is a French commune with 915 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the northern Vosges Mountains in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

history

Pechelbronn was the first place in Europe where oil was extracted. The earth pitch spring , which is still active today , has been documented since 1498 and gave the place the name: " Pech well ". The petroleum from the Pechelbronn layers was initially used medicinally for skin diseases. Merchants, like caricatures , went through the villages with wheelbarrows on which a wooden barrel was attached and sold loose oil to the farmers, which they could use to lubricate their wagons.

Commercial use began in 1735 and ended in 1970. Generations of technicians visited the area to learn how to extract and refine oil. In 1927 the brothers Marcel and Conrad Schlumberger carried out the first electrical borehole surveying in Pechelbronn.

economy

ISRI France S.à.rl, a subsidiary of the German company Isringhausen , manufactures seating systems for commercial vehicles on site.
