history

Territorial history

Niedersteinbach came to the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg around 1790 , which at that time belonged to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt and was assigned to the Wörth office there. With the upheaval begun by the French Revolution , the Amt Wörth became part of France and dissolved in the subsequent administrative reforms. With the collapse of Napoleonic rule, Niedersteinbach came back to the now Grand Duchy of Hesse (-Darmstadt) for a short time . With the demarcation of the Second Peace of Paris in 1815, it belonged again to the Palatinate part of the Wasgau and thus to the Rhine district in the Kingdom of Bavaria . France did not agree to the demarcation, as the connection between the French fortresses Bitsch and Weißenburg ( Wissembourg ) ran through Bavarian territory. In the border convention between Bavaria and France , Bavaria ceded Niedersteinbach and Obersteinbach to France in 1825 .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Niedersteinbach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Weißenburg district in the Lower Alsace district .

Leisure and Tourism

The Vosges Club has marked many hiking trails in the area, which also lead to numerous castle ruins and picturesque rocks. The gastronomy of Niedersteinbach, namely the hotel-restaurant Au Cheval Blanc , has a good reputation, as former Chancellor Helmut Kohl was seen here regularly. There was even a summit meeting with François Mitterrand in the town.
