Wengelsbach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wengelsbach is a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Niedersteinbach in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ), which lies on the German-French border.

Since the place is located in a basin opening to the north to the German border, it is relatively isolated from the environment. Until 1936 the place could only be reached by road from Schönau in Germany . Since then there has been a well-developed road over the Col du Goetzenberg to Niedersteinbach. The road that runs partially along the border from the eastern edge of the village to Schönau in the Palatinate is 1.6 km away, but it is forbidden to drive through it. As part of the laying of a drinking water pipe, the path to the bike path is to be expanded.

Today the place is dominated by tourists and serves as a starting point for hikes to the ruins of the Blumenstein , Wasigenstein , Frönsburg and Gypsy Rocks and the surrounding rock formations.
