history

Salectio (Seltz) in the Roman State Handbook Notitia Dignitatum (first row, middle)

The place Seltz has a long history, which is mainly due to the fact that the Rhine has been easy to cross at this point since time immemorial.

The Celts called the place Saliso , the Romans , who set up a military camp nearby on the Roman Rhine Valley Road , Saletio . Numerous remains of these early times were uncovered around 1900. Parts of these remains can be seen in the educational trail of the Seltzer barrows .

Under the Merovingians the place was called Salosia , under the Carolingians , during whose time there was a castle, Saltz . In 968 Otto I , founder of the Holy Roman Empire , gave the place and the neighboring villages to his wife, Empress Adelheid , who founded a Benedictine abbey there, where she died in 999. Her grave became a place of pilgrimage ; In 1085 the Bishop of Strasbourg obtained her canonization . Seltz received city rights under the Hohenstaufen dynasty , and in 1357 Emperor Charles IV made it an imperial city .

In 1798, among other things, the borders between France and Baden were established at the Rastatt Congress . On January 9, 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte personally convened the cantonal assembly in Seltz . The original document of this ceremony, adorned with the seal of Bonaparte, is kept in the city archives.

Like the rest of Alsace, Seltz belonged to what was then the German Empire from 1871 to 1918 and returned to France after the end of the First World War . During the Second World War , the city was temporarily evacuated. The re-annexation of Alsace to Germany in 1940 put an end to allied troops in the Seltz area in March 1945.
