The villages of Ottersdorf and Steinmauern are in the immediate vicinity .

Together with Ottersdorf and Wintersdorf , Plittersdorf forms the so-called Ried . Plittersdorf is located in the Tiefgestade west of the core city of Rastatt, directly on an old tributary of the Rhine and just under a kilometer from the river. The Rastatt shipping pier there , the ferry connection (to France) and the adjacent PAMINA -Rheinpark are popular excursion destinations.

history

Plittersdorf is the oldest town in the Rastatt district . It was first mentioned in a document in 730/31 on a document from the Weissenburg Monastery, today Wissembourg ( Alsace ), as "Plitharesdophe". In 777 it was called "Blithario villa". The name "Villae Blidersdorf" has also been preserved from this period. The word "villa" can be seen as evidence that it was already a larger settlement.

At that time the village was on the left bank of the Rhine and was assigned to the parish in Seltz . The course of the Rhine kept changing. So Plittersdorf was together with the other vineyards from 1310 to 1464 on an island on the Rhine. Since this meant that going to church, reports of births and weddings could only be made by crossing the Rhine, Ottersdorf was in 1371 by Pope Gregory XI. raised to an independent parish. Plittersdorf became part of this community. In 1388 Plittersdorf became the property of the Counts of Eberstein. In 1780 Plittersdorf became its own parish and the chapel there became a parish church. The changing course of the Rhine made life difficult for the population. Not only did this pose a difficulty for agriculture. Border lines and the district kept shifting, which resulted in disputes. In 1796 the church had to be demolished due to a flood. An emergency church was set up in the tithe barn. In 1798 the school building was also destroyed by the flood. In 1804 an engineer reported to Vierordt that the "Raukehlzugemäch" had been completed and that there was no longer any danger to the place from the water. However, as early as 1806, due to a flood, twelve houses and the rectory had to be demolished and rebuilt further inland. Plittersdorf was also badly affected by the floods in 1807, 1808 and 1810. After that there were only ten houses in the old village. An engineer Ludwig suggested the fortification with stones. This was done, but some houses were destroyed again in 1815. Even giving up the whole of Plittersdorf was considered. Only the straightening of the Rhine by Johann Gottfried Tulla was able to adequately secure Plittersdorf from 1818 onwards.

Since the municipality reform in Baden-Württemberg, which came into force here on April 1, 1972, Plittersdorf has been a district of the younger Rastatt.

Plittersdorf - Seltz Rhine ferry

The new Rhine ferry near Plittersdorf (2010).

Plittersdorf is best known for its Rhine ferry to Seltz in France . This yaw cable ferry is driven by the current of the river, with a cable stretched across the Rhine taking the lead. The Saletio ferry, which went into operation in 2010, has space for six cars. The ferry is particularly important for cyclists and pedestrians. The next road crossings over the Rhine are upstream the nearby Rhine bridge Wintersdorf and the Iffezheim barrage and downstream the Rhine bridge Maxau near Karlsruhe.

Plittersdorf gauge

There has been a water level measuring point on the Rhine since 1813, which was particularly important for the village of Plittersdorf and shipping. Due to the expansion of the Upper Rhine, which was provisionally completed in 1977 with the construction of the Iffezheim barrage, the level has lost its original meaning. However, it is still important for the population during floods. The water levels and discharge values can be called up at any time by calling 07222-19429.
