The canton of Wissembourg is a French constituency in the Bas-Rhin département in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).
The canton of Wissembourg is 400.61 km² and in 2017 had 50,576 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 126 inhabitants per km². Until 2014, the neighboring cantons were the cantons Lauterbourg , Seltz , Soultz-sous-Forêts , Wœrth and Niederbronn-les-Bains in the Haguenau arrondissement, starting clockwise in the east . On the German side is the municipality of Schweigen-Rechtenbach , which belongs to the district of Südliche Weinstrasse .
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Wissembourg District". With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of the Wissembourg arrondissement. From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of the former Weißenburg district . On June 28, 1919, the canton again became part of the Wissembourg arrondissement.

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Wissembourg included the 13 municipalities of Climbach , Cleebourg , Lembach , Niedersteinbach , Oberhoffen-lès-Wissembourg , Obersteinbach , Riedseltz , Rott , Schleithal , Seebach , Steinseltz , Wingen and Wissembourg . Its layout corresponded to an area of 197.07 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6734.
