Girolamo Basso della Rovere (* 1434 in Albisola , Savona province , † September 1, 1507 in Fabrica ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Origin and early years

Girolamo was the first son of the Count of Bistagno, Giovanni Basso, and the sister of Pope Sixtus IV. Luchina della Rovere. In addition to the surname of their father Basso, their descendants also took their mother's surname because of her more important name. The Basso delle Rovere line was born .

Church career

Girolamo Basso della Rovere was Bishop of Albenga from 1472 to 1476 and Bishop of Recanati from 1476 . Pope Sixtus IV , his uncle, elevated Basso della Rovere to cardinal on December 10, 1477. Between 1482 and 1492 he was administrator of the diocese of Gubbio . In 1492 Girolamo Basso della Rovere took part in the conclave that Pope Alexander VI. chose. From 1492 to 1503 he was Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina . After his participation in the first conclave in 1503 , in which Pius III. was elected Pope, he took part in the second conclave of 1503 , where he supported the election of Giuliano della Rovere . On November 29, 1503, he appointed him Cardinal Bishop of Sabina , which he remained until his death in 1507. Under his leadership, the construction of the Loreto Basilica was completed. He was cardinal protector of the Carmelite Order .

His tomb, created by Andrea Sansovino , was completed in 1509 and can be found in the Roman church of Santa Maria del Popolo .
