The conclave of 1492 was the electoral assembly of the cardinals after the death of Pope Innocent VIII and lasted from August 6 to August 11, 1492. It elected Pope Alexander VI.

history

The College of Cardinals had 27 members at the beginning of the conclave . 4 cardinals were not in Rome at the time of the conclave , so that the conclave only had 23 participants.

The cardinals of the conclave were created by five popes:

  1. Pope Calixt III. : 1 cardinal
  2. Pope Paul II : 3 cardinals
  3. Pope Pius II : 1 cardinal
  4. Pope Sixtus IV . : 12 cardinals
  5. Pope Innocent VIII .: 6 cardinals

The favorites of the conclave, which took place in the Sistine Chapel , were the cardinals Ascanio Sforza, Giuliano della Rovere, Ardicino della Porta and Jorge da Costa. However, since none of them received the required number of votes, Sforza went over to Rodrigo de Borja. Supported by Sforza, the cardinals made a pilgrimage to Borja's cell on the eve of the election, where they received enormous pledges for themselves in return for their votes.
