Maffeo Gherardi
Maffeo Gherardi OSB Cam (* 1406 in Venice , † September 14, 1492 in Terni ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church . He was the patriarch of Venice .
Gherardi was abbot of the monastery of St. Michele on Murano near Venice and Abbot General of the Camaldolese . In 1467 he was promoted to Patriarch of Venice. Pope Innocent VIII appointed him cardinal on March 9, 1489 in pectore . His appointment, according to Innocent VIII in July of the same year, should be made public at the next consistory . If the Pope died before such a consistory was held, Gherardi's appointment should also be viewed as published so that he could take part in the next conclave - which accordingly happened. Gherardi attended and chose PopeAlexander VI. , however, died himself on his return from the conclave to Venice.
