The conclave of 1521 was the electoral assembly of the cardinals after the death of Pope Leo X. and lasted from December 27, 1521 to January 9, 1522, i.e. 13 days. His choice fell on Adrian Florenszoon Dedel, who was Pope Hadrian VI. called.

history

The college of cardinals had 48 members at the beginning of the conclave . 9 cardinals were not in Rome at the time of the conclave , so the conclave had 39 participants.

The cardinals of the conclave were created by three popes:

The conclave in the Vatican was only opened 26 days after the death of the Pope, and on the fourth day the cardinals' provisions were reduced to bread and wine. First split into a French and an imperial party, the Conclave Fathers finally split into the faction of young and old cardinals. Even if the imperial party was stronger than the French, the number of votes was not enough for a majority. After the 10th ballot, Cardinal Giulio de 'Medici proposed the election of an absent cardinal and named Adrian Florenszoon Dedel, who was in Spain and did not take part in the conclave. Three cardinals were charged with delivering the election, which the new Pope accepted on March 8, 1522.
