Sigismondo Gonzaga (* 1469 in Mantua ; † October 3, 1525 ibid) was the son of Margrave Federico I Gonzaga of Mantua and cardinal since 1505 .

Origin and career

His mother was Margarete von Bayern (1442–1479), a daughter of Duke Albrecht III. from Bayern-Munich .

Pope Julius II elevated him in the consistory of December 1, 1505 to cardinal deacon with the titular church Santa Maria Nuova (Santa Francesca Romana). On February 10, 1511 he became Bishop of Mantua and left the office on May 10, 1521 to his nephew Ercole Gonzaga . In 1512 Sigismondo succeeded Giovanni de 'Medici as legate in Bologna and in 1521 in the Ancona region . In 1524 he became apostolic administrator of the diocese of Aversa.

After his death, Sigismondo was buried on October 13, 1525 in the Cathedral of San Pietro in Mantua.
