Eckfeld is a municipality in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It has been a member of the Wittlich-Land community since July 1, 2014 .
geography
Eckfeld lies in the middle of the southern Vulkaneifel with its low mountain range in the immediate vicinity of the Eifelmaare . Nearby is the Eckfelder Trockenmaar with numerous palaeontological finds. The prehistoric horse and the oldest honey bee in the world are particularly well known .
The Birkenhof, Buchholz (former monastery), Holzmühle, Lindenhof and Tannenhof residential areas belong to Eckfeld.
history
The place is mentioned for the first time in 973 in a deed of donation from Emperor Otto I to the Echternach monastery . From 1794 Eckfeld was under French rule, in 1815 the place was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 it has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .
Municipal council
The municipal council in Eckfeld consists of eight council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.
Attractions
Fossil finds at 44.3 million years old Eckfelder Maar (z. B. the "Eckfeld ancient horse" and the "oldest honey bee of the world") were obtained from the State Collection of Natural History Rheinland-Pfalz the Maarmuseum found in Manderscheid available.

Church and monastery
The tower of St. Katharina's Church in Eckfeld was built around 1450 and expanded as a defense tower. A new nave was added to the tower in 1882.
Like the church in Pantenburg, the church of St. Katharina in Eckfeld is a branch church of the church in Buchholz.
