About this picture

Kesten is a municipality in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Bernkastel-Kues .

geography

Geographical location

Kesten is surrounded by vineyards in the natural and cultural landscape of the Moselle valley in the Trier region and is located in a small valley widening on the left bank of the river. The closest medium-sized centers are Bernkastel-Kues and Wittlich . The university town of Trier is around 28 kilometers as the crow flies . The Dreismühle residential area also belongs to the community .

climate

Kesten lies in the transition zone from the temperate maritime climate to the continental climate ; The climate is very mild in relation to other regions in Germany - in neighboring Brauneberg , the highest air temperature ever recorded in the Federal Republic of Germany was recorded on August 11, 1998 (41.2 ° C in the shade).

Thanks to the Eifel Barrier , Kesten is protected and protected from rain by westerly winds, which can also have a blow-dry effect. At the same time, air warming is favored by low air exchange with the surrounding area. Associated with this, due to the constant evaporation of the Moselle water, is a regularly high level of humidity , which in summer leads to sometimes stressful, humid weather and numerous thunderstorms.

history

Romanticizing view from 1838.

Kesten - in the 18th and 19th centuries also Kästen - was first mentioned in a document in 936. The small community can therefore look back on over 1000 years of history.

Finds also show that the place was probably settled in Roman and Celtic times. The oldest known place name Castanidum (chestnut grove from Latin : castanea - sweet chestnut) is handed down as a place name from the Middle Ages and possibly goes back to Roman times. In the nearby Dreistal a Roman sour well socket has been preserved.

From the 13th century until the end of the 18th century, the community belonged to the Electorate of Trier - the red cross in the coat of arms indicates this to this day. Since 1946, Kesten has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Due to its location on the banks of the Moselle, Kesten has always been at risk of flooding. In 2009, a technical flood protection was built that is designed for a 15-year flood event.

Older coats of arms depict the vine without a leaf.

Regular events

Local festivals and wine festivals take place regularly. The big wine and street festival takes place on the second weekend in August , at which the local wine queen is crowned. In 2016, Sven Finke in the figure of Bacchus Castanidi was the first man to be crowned wine queen.

The Kesten music association also organizes the fair every spring at St. Georg, alternating with the parish council, at which the wine queen was previously crowned.
