geography

Geographical location

Maring-Noviand is surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests in the natural and cultural landscape of the Moselle in the Trier region and is located in a glacial valley of the river, which was formed at a time when it was not yet on its current bed (around two kilometers away from the town center). The closest medium- sized centers are the cities of Bernkastel-Kues and Wittlich . The university town of Trier is around 33 kilometers as the crow flies .

climate

Maring-Noviand lies in the transition zone from the temperate maritime climate to the continental climate ; The climate is very mild compared to other regions in Germany - in nearby Brauneberg , the record temperature of 41.2 ° C in the shade, the highest air temperature ever recorded in the Federal Republic , was found on August 11, 1998 . Due to the constant evaporation of the nearby Moselle water, there is a regularly high level of humidity , which, especially in summer, leads to sometimes burdensome, humid weather and numerous thunderstorms.

history

Maring and Noviand are Gallo-Roman (more precisely: Moselle -Roman ) place names . The places have been populated at least since Roman times. In 981, a donation from the Archbishop of Trier in Noviand is documented.

The two places Maring and Noviand belonged to the Electorate of Trier until the end of the 18th century . In the so-called French era , the places belonged to the canton of Bernkastel in the Saardepartement from 1798 to 1814 , and in 1815 they were assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna .

Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .
