Canton of Bernkastel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The canton of Bernkastel (also canton of Berncastel ; French: Canton de Berncastel ) was one of eight administrative units into which the Arrondissement of Trier in the Saardepartement was divided. The Canton was in the years 1798 to 1814 of the French Republic (1798-1804) and the Napoleonic Empire (1804-1814). The administrative area essentially corresponds to that of the present-day community of Bernkastel-Kues in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

Before the occupation of the Left Bank of the Rhine in the First Coalition War (1794), the administrative district of the canton Bernkastel established in 1798 belonged mainly to the Electorate of Trier , some communities to the right of the Moselle previously belonged to the County of Veldenz , which was owned by the Electoral Palatinate ; Zeltingen and Rachtig were an exclave of the Electorate of Cologne , Erden belonged to the Kröver Empire .

The administration of the Left Bank of the Rhine was reorganized by the French directorate in 1798 based on the French model. a. a division into cantons has been adopted. The cantons were also district courts of justice . The canton of Bernkastel belonged to the Arrondissement of Trier in the Saar department .

From 1800 the canton was divided into four Mairies : Bernkastel ( Berncastel ), Lieser, Mülheim ( Mulheim ) and Zeltingen. The first president of the canton was the winery owner Karl Everad Ellinckhuysen (1763-1837) in 1798 .

After the Allies regained possession of the Left Bank of the Rhine in January 1814 , the Saar Department and thus also the Canton of Bernkastel became part of the provisional Central Rhine General Government in February 1814 . After the Peace of Paris in May 1814, this Generalgouvernement was divided up in June 1814, the municipalities of the canton Bernkastel lying to the left of the Moselle were assigned to the Lower and Middle Rhine Generalgouvernement under Prussian administration, the municipalities lying to the right of the Moselle (Mairies Bernkastel, Mülheim and Zeltingen ) assigned to the joint state administration commission , which was under the administration of Austria and Bavaria .

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , the area became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in April 1815 . Under the Prussian administration, the canton of Bernkastel was merged into the Bernkastel district, newly formed in 1816, in the administrative district of Trier , which belonged to the Rhine province from 1822 onwards.
