Generalgouvernement Nieder- and Mittelrhein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Generalgouvernement Nieder- und Mittelrhein was established in 1814 during the Wars of Liberation as an administrative organization of the Allies in order to administer the areas conquered in the fight against Napoleon . The General Government was organizationally part of the central administrative department of the occupied territories (French. Département d'Administration Central temporaire ) first Central Board called.

The Generalgouvernement Nieder- and Mittelrhein emerged from the two initially separate Generalgouvernements Mittelrhein (existed since February 2nd, 1814) and Niederrhein (existed since March 10th, 1814).

On the verge of the Peace of Paris on May 30, 1814, the Allies decided to dissolve the Central Rhine General Government. The part of this general government remaining in Germany was divided on the Moselle . The area to the left of the Moselle and the urban area of Koblenz were merged with the Generalgouvernement Niederrhein under Johann August Sack on July 16, 1814 , newly established under the name Generalgouvernement Nieder- und Mittelrhein and directly subordinated to the Prussian administration. The seat of the General Government was Aachen . The part of the previous Generalgouvernement Mittelrhein lying to the right of the Moselle was assigned to the Joint State Administration Commission , which was under the administration of Austria and Bavaria .

At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the areas of the Generalgouvernement were essentially assigned to Prussia. The newly created Prussian province of Lower Rhine comprised the administrative districts of Koblenz , Aachen and Trier .
