Mucus flow

Red slime flow on a tree stump

The leakage of sap from the wounds of trees is referred to as the flow of mucus or milk flow . These are often fresh wounds that have not yet overgrown or opened again. The phenomenon can often be observed in hornbeams . The sap occurs mainly during the growing season .

The secreted juice is colonized by various bacteria and yeasts . These can cause the liquid to change color. In the case of a red tint one speaks of red mucus flow .

Although the flow of mucus can be quite threatening, treatment measures are not absolutely necessary because it is not a direct damage to the tree.
