Steinkallenfels , also Stein-Kallenfels , is the ruin of a hilltop castle in Kallenfels , a district of Kirn in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ).
history
The castle ruin Steinkallenfels was first mentioned in 1212 and was originally an imperial fief of the Lords of Stein, later called Lords of Steinkallenfels (died out in 1778). Hugo von Stein is mentioned as early as 1150 and 1158, who might be named after the castle. It was Ganerbeburg since the 14th century . In a truce agreement from 1371, 25 co-owners are named who had shares in the castle, but presumably not all of them lived there. In 1615 the castle was described as dilapidated. Finally it was blown up by the French in 1682/84 and has been in ruins ever since.
investment
The castle makes use of the spectacular natural rock reef, which also includes the Oberhauser Felsen (so-called "Kirner Dolomites"), which extends across the Hahnenbach Valley. It actually consists of three castle complexes on separate rocks: On the lowest rock, the Stock im Hane castle, which fell into disrepair in the 16th century without any noteworthy wall remains, then the Kallenfels with a square keep on an inaccessible rock and at the highest point, the most extensive castle Stein Castle with a neck moat , Gate tower , bastions , shield wall and pentagonal keep facing the attack side. The three castles were connected to one another by walls , of which only a few remains have survived. The complex is now privately owned and is inaccessible except for the lower rock, but the ruins can be clearly seen from the road.
