history
Around the year 1150, the Stein, Kallenfels and Stock im Hahne castles were built above today's town. The castle or Schloss Stein was built on the top of the rock. The Kallenfels Castle (Kaldenfels) was 80 feet below the Feste Stein. Further down, the Stock im Hahne was built, a residential building more of a tower-like building to defend the path below than it was intended as a knight's apartment.
The first inhabitants were the von Stein family, mostly called de Lapide in Latin documents , more rarely de Petra .
The line of those von und zu Stein Kallenfels expired with the death of Philipp Heinrich Freiherr von und zu Stein Kallenfels on April 8, 1778 in Meisenheim. He was buried on April 11th at 11 o'clock in the church in Abtweiler. With his death, a family of knights that was probably one of the oldest in the area died out. By the end of the 18th century, Kallenfels belonged to the Wartenstein office, during the French era to Mairie Kirn in the Saardépartement (1798–1814) and from 1816 to the Prussian mayor's office in Kirn (renamed Office Kirn-Land in 1927). As part of an administrative reform, the community was incorporated into the city of Kirn on June 7, 1969.
