Life

Julio Salvador Sagreras was the son of Gaspar Sagreras (1838–1901). Since both parents were guitarists, he came into contact with this instrument at an early age. At the age of six he took part in his first concerts. At the age of twelve he took piano and composition lessons at the Buenos Aires Conservatory. He became professor of guitar at the Academia de Bellas Artes . In Buenos Aires he met the publisher Francisco Nuñez, who published around a hundred of his compositions. In 1905 Julio Sagreras founded his own school, the Academia de Guitarra . At the beginning of the 20th century, Sagreras gave numerous concerts and took part in a number of radio recordings.

As a composer he mainly wrote music for guitar and piano and as a teacher he developed his own textbook for guitar. One of his best-known compositions for guitar is El Colibri , which can be found in the repertoire of many well-known guitarists.
