Graach an der Mosel is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Bernkastel-Kues .

Community structure

The local community consists of the districts Graach and Graach-Schäferei . While Graach is in the valley of the Moselle , the district Schäferei is above the vineyards at about 300  m above sea level. NHN .

history

Graach was first mentioned in 975 as Gracha .

Graach belonged to the Electorate of Trier until the end of the 18th century . In the so-called French era , the place belonged to the canton Bernkastel in the Saardepartement from 1798 to 1814 , in 1815 it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna .

Since 1946 the place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Municipal council

The local council in Graach consists of twelve council members, who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Viticulture

The townscape is shaped by wineries and wineries, mostly built from quarry stone , of which the most well-known nationwide are the Willi Schäfer winery and the Philipps-Eckstein winery.

About 90% of the Graacher vineyard area is on the steep slope and 95% is used for growing the Riesling grape variety . Unique is the accumulation of church vineyard names such as Himmelreich, Dompropst and Abtsberg, which in an imperishable way testify to the ancient predilection of the princes and monasteries for Graacher vineyards. Graach is connected to Bernkastel-Kues via a road mainly used by wine growers , whereby the city gate to be passed through is called Graacher Tor .

The winegrower of the year 2007 (according to DLG) comes from Graach-Schäferei, Patrick Philipps, Weingut Philips-Eckstein.
