Rivenich is a municipality in the Verbandsgemeinde Wittlich-Land in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Rivenich is located in the anterior Eifel on the Salm . 33 percent of the municipal area is forested. The closest major city is Trier about 24 km to the southwest.

history

Rivenich was first mentioned in 748 as Riveniacus . After the French Revolution, the place became part of the Saar department . In 1815 the place was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 it has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

The present church in Rivenich was built between 1870 and 1871 in neo-Gothic style according to the plans of Reinhold Wirtz , whereby the medieval tower was preserved. The church underwent an interior renovation in 2000. Frescoes from the 1920s were discovered that had been painted over during the last renovation.

Economy and Infrastructure

Federal Motorway 1 runs northwest of Rivenich . In nearby Hetzerath there is a train station on the Koblenz – Trier railway line .
