Wilfried König (engineer)

Wilfried König (born October 19, 1928 in Rivenich ; † June 27, 2001 ) was a German engineer and scientist in the field of production technology . From 1951 to 1957 he studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University , where he worked as a research assistant at Herwart Opitz from 1956 . In 1962 he received his doctorate and in 1965 he became chief engineer at the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University, where he qualified as a professor. He then worked as a lecturer for machining . In 1968 he became professor for machining technology in Aachen. In 1980 he founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology in Aachen, but remained in a leading position at the WZL until his retirement in 1994. In addition, from 1990 to 1991 he was President of the International Academy for Production Technology (CIRP).

König was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Leuven and the University of Thessaloniki for his services and was awarded the SME Frederick Taylor Research Medal (named after Frederick Taylor ) in 1992 and the Erich Siebel commemorative coin of the European Society for Sheet Metal Processing in 1995.
