The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT (short form Fraunhofer IPT ) is a facility of the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research eV The institute is located on the grounds of the RWTH Aachen Campus in Aachen , its activities are applied research and development in the Assigned to subjects of engineering and mechanical engineering . The institute was founded on July 15, 1980 under the direction of Wilfried König .

The Fraunhofer IPT has been headed since 2018 by Christian Brecher , who also holds the chair for machine tools at the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University (WZL). The institute directorate of the Fraunhofer IPT also includes three other chair holders from the WZL: Thomas Bergs , Robert Schmitt and Günther Schuh .

Research and Development

The Fraunhofer IPT develops system solutions for manufacturing companies. The focus is on the areas of process technology, production machines, mechatronics, production quality and measurement technology as well as technology management.

The research areas of the Fraunhofer IPT are each headed by one of the board members:

Process technology

Head: Thomas Bergs

Production machines

  • Department fiber composite and laser system technology
  • Precision engineering and plastic replication department

Head: Christian Brecher

Production quality and measurement technology

  • Production quality department
  • Production measurement technology department

Head: Robert Schmitt

Technology management

Head: Günther Schuh

Fraunhofer IEM

In Paderborn, the Fraunhofer IPT supported the establishment of the Fraunhofer project group Design Technology Mechatronics from spring 2011 to the end of 2015, which deals with the development of mechatronic systems for control technology, software technology and product creation. Since January 1, 2016, the project group was initially independent as the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronics Design , and then as the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronics Design (IEM) from January 1, 2017 under the direction of Ansgar Trächtler .

Business areas

The Fraunhofer IPT bundles its development activities in five interdisciplinary business areas:

Cooperations

To expand the technology transfer between the European and American markets, the Fraunhofer IPT has been cooperating since 1994 with the Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Innovation CMI in Boston , Massachusetts, which Andre Sharon has headed since 1998. The USA location promotes international cooperation and intensifies contact with institutions in the USA.

In the university sector, there is close cooperation with the four chairs of the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University. This cooperation enables basic research for the Fraunhofer IPT and also serves the training and further education of students and assistants.

Fraunhofer cooperations

  • Fraunhofer Group for Production
  • Fraunhofer Vision Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Lightweight Construction Alliance
  • Fraunhofer AdvanCer Alliance
  • Fraunhofer Alliance for Generative Manufacturing Processes
  • Fraunhofer Alliance Numerical Simulation of Products and Processes
  • Fraunhofer Big Data Alliance

Infrastructure

In 2016, the Fraunhofer IPT employed an average of 450 people, including 219 salaried employees. The operating budget of the Fraunhofer IPT was 27.9 million euros in the 2016 financial year, 75 percent of which came from projects that were carried out directly for industrial clients. Another 25 percent come from publicly funded projects.
