Dodenburg in the Eifel is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Wittlich-Land .
geography
Dodenburg is located in the Eastern Eifel in the Naurather Horst region, around 16 km west of Wittlich .
Dodenburg also includes the Petershof and Dodenburg Castle residential areas .
history
In 1231 the Archbishop of Trier Theoderich certified and confirmed a comparison of the Himmerod Abbey with the knight Werner von der Pforte to break due to land near Rodenerde “not far from Dodenburg and Monasterium” ( Heckenmünster ). Werner von der Pforte was a follower of Theodorich von Bruch.
The Dodenburg itself is mentioned in Trier documents from 1279 as "Dudenburg" for the first time. The moated castle gave the place its name. The castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1791/94 by the Counts of Kesselstatt ; the family owned the castle until 1952. The two-wing building with the round corner turrets, which are reminiscent of the former moated castle, is now privately owned. The park with its avenues still exists in its original form.
Until the end of the 18th century, Dodenburg belonged to the duchy of Luxembourg as a sovereign . The place was assigned to the rulership of Bruch .
After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the Austrian Netherlands , to which the Duchy of Luxembourg belonged, and annexed it in October 1795 . From 1795 to 1814 Dodenburg belonged to the canton of Dudeldorf in the department of forests .
In 1815, the former Luxembourg area east of the Sauer and Our was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . In 1816, the municipality of Dodenburg became part of the Wittlich district in the Trier administrative district in the Grand Duchy of Lower Rhine province , which became part of the Rhine province in 1822. Dodenburg belonged to the mayor's office of Heidweiler .
After the Second World War , the municipality of Dodenburg within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

politics
Municipal council
The municipal council in Dodenburg consists of six council members, who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote, and the honorary local mayor as chairwoman.
coat of arms
The municipality has had a coat of arms since 1981:
Blazon : “The shield is divided fromtop left to bottom right. In the upper right half a red dragon in silver, in the lower left half a field divided crosswise 9 times in silver and blue. " | |
Reasons for the coat of arms: The red dragon in silver is the coat of arms of the von Kesselstatt family. The history of Dodenburg was largely shaped by the Counts of Kesselstatt. The Dodenburg Castle, a former moated castle, came to Casimir Friedrich von Kesselstatt in 1790 through an inheritance. In the middle of the 18th century he was enfeoffed with the castle. The Luxembourg colors (blue and silver) symbolize Dodenburg's former membership of the Duchy of Luxembourg . |
