Longkamp is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bernkastel-Kues and is located on the edge of the Hunsrück on the Moselle heights.

history

The place name Longkamp was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 1030 when Margravine Jutta von Lothringen, wife of Adalbert von Lothringen, gave her farms in Bernkastel-Kues, Longkamp and Monzelfeld to the then St. Eucharius monastery near Trier (later St. Mathias ) gave. Longkamp is derived from the Latin longus campus , which in German means "long field" or the "field of longus ". Roman artifacts and remains of walls were found in the area. Until 1802 the place formed a municipality with Kommen . Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Horst Gorges (CDU) has been the local mayor of Longkamp since June 2019. He replaces Franz-Josef Klingels (non-party).

Economy and Infrastructure

While there were 150 farms in the 1950s, agriculture plays only a minor role today. There are only two farmers left who work as their main occupation, even more as a sideline.

In Longkamp there is a Catholic kindergarten and a community elementary school.

The place is connected to the Moselle and the Hunsrückhöhenstraße with the federal highway 50 . Hahn Airport is 21 kilometers away .
