Wintrich is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Bernkastel-Kues .

Geographical location
Wintrich is located in the natural and cultural landscape of the Moselle valley on the right bank of the river; there the valley widens to a landscape that is determined by flat bank slopes and former Moselle loops. On the other hand, the slopes on the opposite side of the river to the Eifel rise from the hillside, which is covered with vineyards and partly wooded .
Wintrich includes the districts and residential areas Am Kestener Weg, Wintrich train station, Buhlenhell, Geierslay winery, In der Krauwies, Johanneshof, Kasholz and Rondel.

Immediately neighboring communities include Minheim , Kesten and Brauneberg . The closest medium-sized centers are Bernkastel-Kues , around 10 kilometers away, and Wittlich , around 20 kilometers away. Trier is about 40 kilometers away.

history
The Celts , Romans and Franks already settled in the area of today's local community. Wintrich was first mentioned in documents in 960 AD when King Otto I donated his court in Wintrich to the St. Maximin Abbey in Trier . In 1098, Emperor Heinrich IV confirmed his ownership in Wintrich (today's Simonsberg vineyard) to the Simeonstift in Trier. The state sovereignty belonged to the Archbishopric Trier .
The Celtic-Roman name vindriacum means something like "winegrowing village"; Viticulture has always been practiced there. Half-timbered houses , winding streets and old wineries bear witness to the historical tradition .
Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Municipal council

Viticulture
In the Geierslay, Ohligsberg and Stefanslay vineyards, viticulture is practiced, and Wintrich became known nationwide above all for the "Großer Herrgott" vineyard. In 1968, a uniquely large crucifix was installed on the Geyerskopf in the vineyards , which fits the old name. It serves as the landmark of the wine-growing village and can be easily recognized by floodlights , even from a great distance, both during the day and at night . Riesling is the usual grape variety here; In addition, Burgundy, Rivaner, Kerner and Dornfelder, among others, are produced in small quantities.
Wintricher Passion Play
The Wintrich Passion Play has been performed every five years since 1902 for several weeks. They depict part of the life of Jesus . The games are well attended, with 8,000 visitors for the 100th anniversary. The most suitable setting is the church in Wintrich. The Passion Play Association with its approximately 350 members provides the majority of the actors. In addition to the performers, the choir is one of the most important elements. The last Passion Play took place in 2017, so the next ones will be held again in 2022.
Economy and Infrastructure
At Wintrich there is a barrage of the Moselle ; but no bridge . A bypass route leads traffic around the place.
