Maar Museum

The Maarmuseum in Manderscheid in Rhineland-Palatinate wants visitors the great natural diversity and the international significance of the Eifel - maar bring to science and the region closer.

exhibition

The common thread or the communication goal in the exhibition is "the origin, history and development of the Eifel maars in the past and in the present". The aspects of the maars are presented not only selectively, but also in larger, international contexts. The basis for this is the specialist knowledge of many international scientists who are involved in setting up the museum.

The exhibition is supplemented by its own hiking trail "Geo-Route Vulkaneifel around Manderscheid", which is managed and organized by the Maarmuseum Manderscheid.

building

The building of today's museum was erected around 1927 in expressionistically influenced forms of the new building . The listed building originally served as a ballroom and gym. In the course of the research results around the maar, this striking building was selected as the new maar museum. From 1996 to 1999 the renovation took place, during which the building was extended by a three-storey extension. The extension is not used for the exhibition area, but creates space for a so-called “living museum business” with a seminar room, library, research laboratory, storage rooms and work rooms for visiting researchers from Germany and abroad. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate funded this renovation and the establishment of the exhibition to 80%.
