Louis de Bourbon-Vendôme
Louis de Bourbon-Vendôme (born January 2, 1493 in the fortress Ham , † March 11, 1557 in the Hôtel de Bourbon in Paris ) was a French cardinal . As Legat a latere of the Holy See in Savoy , he also performed military duties under the kings Francis I and Henry II .
biography
Louis de Bourbon was the fourth son of François de Bourbon, comte de Vendôme (1470–1495) and Marie de Luxembourg , Countess of Saint-Pol († 1546). His godfather was Louis de Bourbon, 1st Prince de La Roche-sur-Yon (1473-1520). He was raised most of the time in the castle of La Fère , where his mother retired after the death of her husband (1495).
He studied at the Collège de Navarre and graduated as a Docteur en Théologie at the Sorbonne , where he was a provisional manager at the time of King Henry II . He was ordained a priest by Cardinal Georges d'Amboise at Faremoutiers Abbey .
On April 24, 1510 he was elected bishop of Laon with dispensation for episcopal ordination because of his too young age of 17 years ; he held the office until March 23, 1552. On May 3, 1517, now 24 years old, he was ordained bishop in the church of the priory of the Val-des-Écoliers by Cardinal Philip of Luxembourg . On June 9 of the same year he took his oath of office before King Franz I.
In the consistory of July 1, 1517, he was appointed cardinal priest by Pope Leo X and was assigned the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite . Probably the following year he signed the marriage contract between the less than one year old Dauphin François and the two year old Mary Tudor . On August 8, 1519 he became administrator of the Diocese of Le Mans ; he administered the diocese through episcopal vicars until August 13, 1535. On June 11, 1521 he opted for the titular church of San Martino ai Monti .
Louis de Bourbon-Vendôme did not take part in the conclave 1521–1522 (December 27 to January 9) with the election of Hadrian VI. participated, but in the conclave of 1523 (October 1st to November 10th) with the election of Clement VII. During this pontificate he was papal legate in Umbria . On January 11, 1524 he was appointed administrator of the diocese of Luçon by Clement VII , he remained so until March 27, 1527. On March 5, 1531 he crowned Eleanor of Castile Queen of France. In the following years he managed several dioceses as apostolic administrator. On May 23, 1547, he led the funeral ceremonies for the late King Francis I. Two years later, on June 10, 1549, he crowned Caterina de 'Medici Queen of France in the Abbey of Saint-Denis. He was also abbot of Saint-Vincent de Laon , Notre-Dame de Colombs, Saint-Léonard-de-Ferrières, Saint-Faron de Meaux , Saint-Serge d' Angres , Notre-Dame de Ham and Saint-Amand- de-Pevèle. After all, he was the tutor of Louis I de Bourbon, prince de Condé , had the Château of Anizy-le-Château restored and the Palais Bourbon in Paris built.
Louis de Bourbon-Vendôme took part in the respective conclave in 1534 , 1549/50 , in April and May 1555 .
On February 24, 1550 he rose to the class of cardinal bishops and was by Pope Julius III. appointed Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina . In 1551 King Henry II appointed him governor of Picardy . In 1552 Cardinal de Bourbon-Vendôme was also deputy to Gaspard de Coligny , governor of Paris and Île-de-France . In 1554 he baptized Henry of Navarre .
Cardinal de Bourbon died on March 11, 1557 and was buried in Laon Cathedral.
