Philip of Luxembourg (* 1445 in France , † June 2, 1519 in Le Mans ; French Philippe de Luxembourg ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

biography

The son of pseudo Cardinal Thibaut of Luxembourg and Philippe de Melun received the priesthood for the Diocese of Arras . In 1476 he succeeded his father as Bishop of Le Mans . Pope Alexander VI created him cardinal priest in 1495 and awarded him the titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the same year . Postulated as bishop of Thérouanne in 1496 , he renounced the diocese of Le Mans in 1507 , where he was succeeded by his nephew. When he died, he took over the diocese again at the end of 1509. Cardinal Bishop of Albano since the middle of 1509, and in the same year he also became Bishop of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières . After he had exchanged the suburbicarian diocese of Albano with the cardinal diocese Frascati in 1511, he renounced the diocese of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières in 1511. His name was on a document, dated May 16, 1511, with which Pope Julius II was to be summoned to the Council of Pisa . The Cardinal of Luxemburg was not informed of this, he protested sharply and did not take part in the meeting. In 1516, Luxembourg exchanged the diocese of Le Mans for the diocese of Arras, which he renounced in 1518.

In addition to his dioceses, he was also the owner of the abbeys of Saint-Pierre de Jumiègues (1510-1518), Saint-Vincent near Le Mans (since 1514) and Saint-Martin de Seez. He was considered the richest prelate in France. From 1516 there was a papal legate in France.

Philip of Luxembourg did not participate in any of the three conclaves that took place during his cardinalate. He was buried in the Cathedral of Le Mans .
