Coat of arms of the House of Melun

Melun was a family of the northern French - Belgian nobility . The name-giving headquarters of sex is, the community Melun in Seine-et-Marne in the region Ile-de-France .

Family origin

The early history of the family is presented by Père Anselme and Courcelles in their works, although both of them largely dispense with citing sources.

Robert the monk reports in the Historia Iherosolimitana , Livre IV, that the Melun family was of royal descent. Courcelles confirms this, seeing as the head of the family Aymon (Hamon), Count of Corbeil , and his wife Elisabeth, who brought the county into the marriage; Elisabeth was - "proven by the unanimous testimony of the historians" - a close relative of Hadwig of Saxony , the wife of Hugo the Great , Duke of the Franks, and mother of Hugo Capet , and consequently of Emperor Otto I , Hadwig's brother. After Aymon's death, Hugo Capet gave Elisabeth the counties of Melun and Paris when she married Bouchard , Count of Vendôme and Montoire , in her second marriage .

Aymon and Elisabeth - Courcelles continued - had several sons. One of these sons was Count Albert von Corbeil, whose daughter Germaine had been married since 1013 to Mauger, the son of Duke Richard I of Normandy , who then administered Corbeil on behalf of his wife. (In fact, Thibaut, monk in Cluny , abbot of Cormery and designated abbot of Saint-Pierre in Melun, is another son of Aymon and Elisabeth.)

Bouchard and Elisabeth had two sons after Courcelles, of whom the older, who was also called Bouchard, became Viscount de Melun, but died before his father, so that the younger, Renaud of Vendôme , who had been Bishop of Paris since 1991 , left the county of Vendôme inherited. Courcelles further writes that after the death of Bouchard II, Hugo Capet entrusted Salon and Josselin successively with the vice-county of Melun, and since they were relatives of the monarch, it is likely that they were sons of Elisabeth and Aymon, Count of Corbeil, her first husband , were. "This is the only way of explaining the ancient kinship of the House of Melun with the exalted House of France that has been confirmed by contemporary historians."

Family history

The first Melun, which was mentioned in a document in 991, was Salon, Viscount of Melun.

Josselin I was seigneur at the court of Hugo Capet and Robert II.

Guillaume le Charpentier took part in the First Crusade . Robert the monk wrote that, despite his escape, Guillaume was not punished during the siege of Antioch because he was related to Hugo of Vermandois . He describes Guillaume as invincible and cowardly.

Adam I was defeated and captured by Aimery VII. De Thouars in 1202 . Aimery VII was Johann Ohneland's henchman . Later Adam I took part in the Battle of Bouvines on the side of Philip II .

Guillaume II married the last of the Montreuil-Bellays , as a result of which the fiefdom and castle Montreuil-Bellay passed into the possession of the Melun, who from then on could also call themselves Seigneur de Montreuil-Bellay .

Jean II, Seigneur de La Borde-le-Vicomte, founded the branch of Seigneur de La Borde-le-Vicomte and de la Motte-Saint-Florentin , du Buignon and de Brumetz . La Borde-le-Vicomte is now part of Châtillon-la-Borde and de la Motte-Saint-Florentin , du Buignon and de Brumetz.

With the death of Jean, Seigneur de Courtery, Courtery passed into the possession of the Escoubleau de Sourdis family.

Jeanne de Nantouillet brought Nantouillet and the barony of the country into her marriage to Philippe. Philip's son Charles I got Normanville , which remained in the family's possession until 1572. Charles I was accused of high treason in 1468, beheaded and his lands confiscated except for a fiefdom, but rehabilitated posthumously in 1488 and the lands returned to his descendants.

Buignon was sold in 1500 by Louis, a grandson of Jean II, and bought in 1505 by Antoine de Melun, Seigneur de La Louptière , a half-brother of Charles I. Antoine founded the branch of the Seigneur de La Louptière of the Meluns. He exchanged Motte-Saint-Florentin and Chantecler for La Louptière, Bordes and Vau-Régnier with his father-in-law Gilles de Noyen on November 10, 1486.

Simon , Seigneur de La Loupe, founded the branch of the Seigneur de La Loupe , which ended in 1313. Simon followed Louis IX in 1270 . on the Sixth Crusade . In 1281 he was Sénéchal from Périgord , Quercy , Limousin and Carcassonne . In 1290 he became Marshal of France . He died on July 11, 1302 in the Spore Battle .

His nephew Jean II, Viscount de Melun, was awarded in 1313 that he was of royal blood. In 1329 he was Grand Chamberlain of France as Edward III. Philip VI paid homage. In 1340 he was on Philip VI's side in the fighting between the two kings. involved. His first marriage was Jeanne de Tancarville, the only daughter and heiress of Robert de Tancarville ( House Tancarville ), as a result of which the County of Tancarville became the property of the House of Melun. His second wife Isabelle d' Antoing and Épinoy was the only daughter of Hugues VI. and thus Épinoy also passed into the possession of the Meluns. The children from the first marriage are part of the Tancarville branch of the Melun family and the children from the second marriage are part of the Épinoy branch .

The descendants of Jean III. kept Tancarville County in their possession until 1417. Then the county went through the marriage of Marguerite, Jean III's granddaughter. into the possession of the House of Montgommery .

Hugues, a son of Jean II from his second marriage, went to Belgium and took over his mother's lands. He founded the branch of the Seigneur d'Antoing and Comtes or Prince d'Épinoy and Duc de Joyeuse . Louis II. Was the last Melun as Duc de Joyeuse, he died in 1724. The Viscounts de Gent also emerged from this branch , whose line died out in 1603.

The branch that bore the title Comtes und Vicomtes de Melun expired in 1739 with the death of Louis-Gabriel.
