County Melun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vice- County of Melun , later County of Melun , with the main town of Melun, was owned by the same family named after them since the beginning of the 13th century . The de Melun inherited the county of Tancarville in Normandy in the mid- 14th century and lost it again a short time later. However, they were able to hold onto the burgraviate of Ghent , which fell to them at the end of the 14th century.

As Counts of Épinoy (from 1514) and Prince of Épinoy (from 1541) they came to the fore on the European stage. While the princes reached the top of the hierarchy with the Duchy of Joyeuse in 1714 (and died out ten years later), the viceroy of Melun became a county in 1675. This branch of the family died out in 1738.
